One more thing

Edmund and I were featured in an article in Westbrook's American Journal.

I don't see it online yet, but if you live in the Portland area, pick it up!

I might try to scan it for you other dudes!

50,109 - by the skin of my teeth!

The Obligatory screen shot of progress:

So here is a dirty little secret. My final wordcount was 50,109 according to NaNoWriMo, but was 50,000 exactly according to word:

word_wordcount

Interesting Facts:

  • Final Word Count: 50,109

  • Words since Saturday Afternoon: 25,683

  • Computer crashes: 5? 6? So many, I lost count. Really.

  • Time Novel Validated by NaNoWriMo: 11:53 pm, Eastern Standard Time

  • Husbands who left fun party at a bar to rush home and let me use his computer, which he had with him: 1

By the way, I'm a winner:

Oh. My. God.

Guess what happened at 10:00 pm?

Hint: I had one thousand words left for my 50,000 word limit.

Another Hint: I was saving my Novel.

My computer crashed!

Guess what happened again at 10:05, 10:15, 10:20, and a few more times. Yes, you guessed it, my computer crashed AGAIN!

Fortunately for me, I have a wonderful husband, who came home from the countdown party to let me use his computer.

Thank you Edmund. I am lucky to have met you. And lucky to have you.

So, did it work? Check it out, bay-be:

Just so you know, Sally's father is not in the book. (My book, the book I am writing.) There is no lion, no company.

Cool NaNo Chart

This is a cool NaNoWriMo Chart that was made by the dude knowbuddy at NaNo.

Sweet, eh?

And another thing

As of right now I am ranked 42nd in the state of Maine!

Yes out of 200 Mainers who are tackling NaNoWriMo I am the 42nd in word count.

(Edmund is 4th. Yes, you heard it here first, my wonderful husband is 4th in the State.)(Gah!)

18,563 & on the mend

Took a couple of days off from writing. Why, I was stressing out, oh and I couldn't think with this cold that I still have.

Back on track though. Tonight I wrote 978 words for a total of 18,563. I am about 13,110 words behind. But I am still in. All the way, baby.

I desperately need to get to 50,000. Wish me luck!

Really Sick

I am really sick and miserable, so I have given myself yesterday and today off from writing my book. I am not enjoying the sickness thang.

Tomorrow I will write, write like the wind.

And Sunday too.

Today I rest, and ruminate on my dear husband's gajillion words.

More Weird Dreams

Last night I dreamt about immortal frankenstein-type beings (there are always two, man and a woman, always two) who were 7,000 years old and could travel from city to city in secret passageways.

The secret passageway in my dream was to Minneapolis, and it was located in a local McDonald's garbage chute. (The passageway/portal does not work for mere humans.)

They also had superpowers.

Ice Cubes?

Weird Dreams last night. Very Weird

The first one that I remember, albeit hazily, was that I was watching a drama set in England with Kevin Kline as one character and some other dude as another. They used to work together, then the crazy one did something bad and the uncrazy one quit. Then the crazy one, as befitting his crazy status, beat the crap out of the other dude.

I can't remember which character Kevin Kline was, crazy or not crazy.

The last picture in my mind was of the uncrazy one driving away, looking like another person (because he was beaten so badly). Weird.

The second one that I remember is one of those dreams where I was "awake" and laying next to my husband. All of a sudden I started shivering, but I wasn't cold. My whole body was shaking. My teeth were chattering. After a minute or so, I had ice cubes in my mouth. I had made ice cubes in my mouth! (I was eating a cough drop at the time.)

Words today 1,901; but as you can see above, I am behind a few thousand, and will be even more behind in a few moments.

That said, I had a good day today. Tomorrow I will be at Panera all day (except for a while in the afternoon.) Maybe I can rack up the rest of the words I need.

Sadly lacking: Plot; believable characters; conflict.

But I did just kill off another clown.

Edmund is working on breaking 30,000 today. Grrrr.

Mumsie

I spent a lot of time at my parent's house today. They were going up north for the day and asked me to look in on Gracie, their dog. Knowing I had about 3 more loads of laundry to do, and I knew their house was empty, I packed up my gear and trucked over to their house, which is less than a mile away from our house.

Good work done today, and I have some more writing to do tonight. I got another 995 words done, with 1,636 total. I will not catch up at this pace, but we'll see. If I do 2,500 a day until the end I will be golden. But lets not get too excited.

Anyway, my mother has been giving me novel writing advice, and has even offered to help me write the novel (I mean write it for me.) Her advice: describe the clowns because their cosutmes have lots of pieces and are all differnt; describe every item in the room; who, what, where, when, why

I think I'll use her advice...

(does it still count if your mother writes part of your novel?)

Sunday Write-In at Panara's

The recap: It is Sunday and I am 3,603 behind and to be on track by the end of the day I need to write 5,270 words. Doable. But a daunting task.

I was not able to write on Friday or Saturday because I participated in the Toastmasters District 45 Conference as a Humorous Competion contestant and centerpiece designer/creator. I spent Friday evening after work preparing for the conference. Yesterday I woke at 5:50 am and went to Troy's house to blow up 30 helium balloons (he is a balloon twister as well.) We stuffed them all in my car (good thing it is a huge one) and I drove to LA (Lewiston/Auburn, Maine), went to a workshop, made some centerpieces, placed helium balloons, had lunch, went to a couple more workshops, got ready for the contest, had the contest, had a cocktail hour, banquet, listened to a speech, found out I did not place in the contest, hung out in the hospitality room and ended out getting home at 1 am.

DSCF2587

Not one balloon popped. (Except by dinner time one of the centerpiece balloons at my table.)

Oh, and my husband Edmund, his word count is 15,579 - and he is 6 days ahead...

Need sleep, and may not get many words in tomorrow.

Catch Up on Sunday... (fingers crossed.)

My damned Husband

So, Edmund, my husband is also participating in NaNoWriMo.

Let me get it on record as saying that it was MY idea to join NaNo. I was the one who mentioned it to him, and suggested that it might be a cool thing to do together. After a week (maybe two) Edmund said that he would do it too.

When October 1st rolled around, and we were finally able to sign up on the NaNoWriMo.org site, I was chomping at the bit to sign up and get psyched up to write my first novel. Edmund was a bit more lackadaisical about it, joining up only when my incessent nagging got to be too much for him.

Where am I going with this?

Since Midnight on November 1st Edmund has written 8,512 words. Eight thousand five hundred and twelve.

I have written 4,392 - with hopefully more before I go to sleep.

I am doing well, but Edmund is kicking my ass!

Name Change: Helen Who?

So I had picked out a name for my female protagonist: Helen. Was thinking of Helen of Troy and my great aunt Helen.

I realized the name was not working for me, Helen was seeming a bit prissy, so today I changed it to Maddy King. Short, sweet and cute. More clown-like. Awesome!

My male protagonist's name is Michael Black (not Mike. He hates Mike.)

"Shakes the Clown"

So how do you research a novel set at a clown convention? Well, I don't know either.

As part of my research I purchased and watched "Shakes the Clown" on DVD. Well, I purchased it last week and watched it today.

The movie was much like I remembered it, silly, funny and crass (gross even.) When I first saw it I had a problem with the cocaine snorting clowns but it didn't bother me as much this time. Maybe because I am no longer clowning and it has been a few years.

I was hoping it would inspire me for my convention-themed book. But it didn't really. Most of the clowns I know are cheerful, pun-ridden pranksters and not drunk, pissed-off bozos. Now the drunk clowns work for the movie, just not for me and my story.

But all clowns do beat up mimes. That is pretty universal.*

(*not really.*)

(*not really.)

1,707 -- Great Start!

Of course I wanted to write 10,000 words today, but I finished a very respecatable 1,707. I wrote 627 during lunch and the rest (1080) this evening after I cooked dinner and watched the movie "Shakes the Clown."

Now it is time to go to sleep. I have a very busy rest of the week going on, so I hope I can keep this up!

In order for me to write 50,000 words in 30 days I have to average at least 1,667 words per day. Yeah me, first day and I am ahead. Tomorrow night I twist balloons after work, Thursday I have Toastmasters, and Friday and Saturday I am getting ready for a speech competion and a balloon gig. Hopefully I will find some time to write and/or be able to catch up on Sunday.

As I write I see myself writing sucky things, lurking out of the corner of my eye, I try not to go back and fix them. Let them be sucky. This is a first draft. I can fix everything. And, frankly, I have no idea how the story will unfold, so I am just going to keep going.

It is nice to have rules. No stopping. Keep writing. And all that rot.

I'm a Star

I had a bad dream last night

I am not sure why, but it was a writing dream: I dreamt that a girl I went to high school with had written a novel, and it was being published.

Maybe I am subconsciously envious of her, because she has had a pretty successful career and overall life since high school. But she also worked pretty hard to get where she is, so it isn't like she was handed anything on a platter. But in my dream I was like, "oh, so now you are going to write a book too, bitch!"

About the Book

The working title is Jesterfest.

"Insert female protagonist name here" has received the chance of a lifetime - to be considered the best clown in the world, and it's all right in her home town. But the contestants start dying, and she is forced to join forces with a local police detective. Will she be next, will they solve the mystery in time, or will they be too busy doing the nasty?

Or something like that.

I really have to come up with some names for my characters, don't I?

New Favorite Drink

Mix one package of hot chocolate with fresh brewed coffee. Wait until the coffee cools down enought to drink it. Enjoy.

For extra chocolatey and sweet mix two packages of hot chocolate with the coffee.

So, just what is this NaNoWriMo thing, anyway?

NaNoWriMo is the cool way of saying National Novel Writing Month. From their webpage:

National Novel Writing Month is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing November 1. The goal is to write a 175-page (50,000-word) novel by midnight, November 30.

Valuing enthusiasm and perseverance over painstaking craft, NaNoWriMo is a novel-writing program for everyone who has thought fleetingly about writing a novel but has been scared away by the time and effort involved.

Because of the limited writing window, the ONLY thing that matters in NaNoWriMo is output. It's all about quantity, not quality. The kamikaze approach forces you to lower your expectations, take risks, and write on the fly.

Make no mistake: You will be writing a lot of crap. And that's a good thing. By forcing yourself to write so intensely, you are giving yourself permission to make mistakes. To forgo the endless tweaking and editing and just create. To build without tearing down.

Collage Fun

On her webpage, Jennifer Cruise discusses the benefits of doing a collage for writing a novel - and also shares pictures of her collages.

This is inspirational pre-writing, not an art project, so it can be as minimal and as sloppy as you want. Barbara and I love messing with paper and glue and paint, so we'll build a working model of a steam engine given the chance. But if you can get the look and feel of your book by gluing half a dozen pictures together on newsprint, you'll be ready to write while we're still cutting and pasting.

So, I did my own collage, something that for me evokes the feeling of attending clown conventions:

Blog Manifesto of Purpose

... or something like that.

Here I will write about the process of writing Jesterfest - but I will not post the novel. Either it will be good enough to be published or not. If it is good enough to be published, I will try to get it published. If it isn't I won't embarrass myself and future generations of my family by posting it for the Internet.*

*Seriously, I embarrass myself enough already without proving to the world that I am wasting my time writing novels.

Regarding Suckage

Last Post I said:

It will probably suck.

As a clarification, the "it" in that sentence refers to the book and not the blog. Of course the blog will probably suck too, but that is fine with me, I have a long history of sucky blogs dating from way back in 1998 or 1999. So there.

Novel in a Month

Starting November 1st, I will be writing my novel, Jesterfest! This will chronicle my saga as I prepare and write my seminal work.

It will probably suck.
